Fixtures & Mounting

Anything that has to go on a wall or ceiling and stay there — safely, level, first time.

Mounting looks like the simplest category on this list and produces the most expensive failures. A television that comes off a wall takes the drywall with it. A ceiling fan hung from a standard light box instead of a fan-rated brace wobbles, then works its fixings loose over a couple of years.

The whole job is in the anchoring. Finding real structure rather than trusting a stud finder’s first beep, using the right anchor for the substrate, and getting the mount level before anything heavy hangs on it. Brick, tile and plaster each need a different approach, and none of them forgive guessing.

Fixture replacement — ceiling fans, light fixtures, thermostats, smoke detectors, doorbells and smart locks — is like-for-like work at existing locations. New circuits, new runs and panel work are a licensed electrician’s job, and we will tell you when that is what your job actually is.

Questions

Common questions

Can you mount a TV over a fireplace?

Usually, and there are two things to check first. Heat, because some fireplaces put enough of it up the wall to shorten a television’s life, and structure, because a masonry or stone face needs different anchors than framed drywall. Both are quick to establish on site. Cable routing behind the wall is normally possible on framed walls and rarely possible on solid masonry.

Can you replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan?

Only if the box is rated for a fan, and a standard light box is not. A fan needs a fan-rated box with a brace fixed to the framing, because a light fixture hangs still and a fan applies constant vibration and side load. If yours is not rated, replacing the box is part of the job — it is not an upsell, it is what stops the fan coming down.

Do you do electrical work?

Like-for-like fixture replacement at existing locations — fans, lights, thermostats, smoke detectors, doorbells and smart locks. New circuits, new wiring runs, panel work and anything inside the walls is licensed electrician work, and we will say so rather than take it on.

How much weight can a wall actually hold?

Far more into a stud than into drywall alone, which is the whole point of doing it properly. Into framing with the correct lag hardware, a wall handles a large television or heavily loaded shelving without complaint. Into drywall with the anchors that came in the box, much less — and drywall anchors fail slowly, which is why the shelf comes down a year later rather than on day one.
