Most drywall calls in this area are not accidents. North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells in the wet months and shrinks in the dry ones, and the slab moves with it. That movement shows up indoors as hairline cracks running diagonally from the corners of door and window openings, nail pops down a hallway, and seams that open along a ceiling line. Patching those without addressing texture and paint just moves the problem somewhere you can see it.
We cut back to solid board, back the repair properly instead of relying on mesh alone, and match the existing texture before any paint goes on. Orange peel, knockdown, and the heavier hand textures common in homes built here through the eighties and nineties all spray and knock differently, so the match is done on a scrap board first and held against the wall before it goes on the repair.
Painting is the same discipline. Cutting in clean, sanding between coats where it matters, and taking the extra hour on prep that makes the difference between a wall that looks painted and one that looks new. If the room has aged unevenly, we will tell you honestly whether a spot repaint will blend or whether the wall needs to go corner to corner.
Questions
Common questions
How much does drywall repair cost?
It comes down to three things: the size of the opening, whether the texture has to be matched, and how much paint work follows. A single small hole in a flat-painted wall is a short visit. The same hole in a knockdown-textured wall in a room that has faded unevenly is a longer one, because blending is what makes it invisible. Text a photo to the number on this page and you will get a real figure, not a range.
Can you match my existing wall texture?
Yes — orange peel, knockdown, splatter and most hand textures. We test the match on a scrap piece and hold it against your wall in the room’s own light before it touches the repair. Texture that matches in a garage under a work light often does not match in a north-facing living room.
Why do the same cracks keep coming back above my doors?
Because the slab underneath is still moving. Clay soil across Carrollton, Plano and the rest of North Texas expands and contracts with the seasons, and the corners of door and window openings are the weakest points in a wall, so that is where the stress shows. A repair done with proper backing and a flexible joint compound will hold far longer than a skim of mud, but if the cracking is severe, widening or accompanied by doors that will not latch, that is a foundation conversation and we will say so rather than sell you a patch.
Do you remove popcorn ceilings?
Yes, including containment and cleanup, and the retexture and paint afterwards. One caution worth stating plainly: ceilings sprayed before roughly 1980 can contain asbestos. If your home is that vintage, the material should be tested before anyone scrapes it. We will not remove an untested ceiling from a house of that age.
