Carpentry & Flooring

Framing, cabinets, shelving, stairs and floors — the structural end of the trade that most handyman services turn down.

This is the work that separates a handyman from someone with a drill. Subfloor repair, rot and water damage, stair and railing rebuilds, cabinet installation, framing and custom built-ins all require knowing what is load-bearing and what is not, and being willing to open something up and deal with what is actually behind it.

Rot and water damage repair is worth calling out. It shows up in predictable places — under exterior door thresholds, around tubs and showers where the seal failed years ago, at the base of door frames on the weather side of the house, and beneath dishwashers that have been leaking slowly. By the time it is visible from the room, the sound material usually stops well past where the discolouration does. We cut back to solid wood, treat, and rebuild, rather than covering it.

On flooring: laminate, vinyl plank and tile, including the parts that determine whether a floor lasts — subfloor flatness, moisture, transitions and expansion gaps. A floating floor installed tight to the wall will buckle in a North Texas summer, and no amount of good material saves it.

Questions

Common questions

My floor feels soft in one spot. What does that mean?

Usually a compromised subfloor, and usually water — an old appliance leak, a failed shower pan, or a slow supply-line drip that has been going long enough to soak in. It rarely gets better on its own. The repair means lifting the covering, cutting out the affected decking, dealing with the source, and rebuilding. Finding out early is much cheaper than finding out late.

Do I need to remove my old flooring first?

It depends on what is going down and what is underneath. Some vinyl plank can go over sound existing flooring; tile and most laminate cannot, and going over a floor that is not flat will telegraph every high spot. We assess the substrate first rather than assuming, because that decision is what determines whether the floor is still flat in five years.

Can you build custom shelving or a closet system?

Yes — built-ins, pantry and garage shelving, closet systems and bookcases, built to the space rather than assembled from a kit that nearly fits. Anchoring matters here more than people expect: shelving carrying real weight needs to find studs or use appropriate anchors, and that is what stops a loaded shelf coming off a wall two years later.
